Attention: Ms. Susanne Koltes-Al-Zoubi (reference no. 13-05)

The Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg is seeking ambitious, highly qualified post-doctoral researchers to work on nearby and distant galaxies or observational cosmology. Several positions are available.

The MPIA extragalactic research group is pursuing a wide range of astrophysical topics, among them: the extension of the SDSS project; multi-wavelength studies of nearby galaxies (in particular through the THINGS and SINGS surveys); the structure, dynamics and evolution of galaxies and their (active) nuclei, from the nearby to the highest redshift Universe; and the analysis of cosmological multiwavelength (X-ray through radio) wide-field photometric redshift surveys, e.g., extensions to COMBO-17 and GEMS.

The successful candidates will have access to the Very Large Telescope in Chile, the twin 8.4 meter Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the APEX submillimeter telescope in Chile. In addition to these facilities, MPIA astronomers extensively use the 2.2 m MPG telescope on La Silla, the 2.2 and 3.5 m telescopes on Calar Alto, and the IRAM and NRAO facilities. As part of its surveys program, the galaxies and cosmology group at the Institute participates in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey project (and its extension), and anticipates substantial observing time at the VLT Survey Telescope.

Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of two or three years and includes funds for publications, travel, etc.

Interested candidates should send application materials, including curriculum vitae, and a brief statement of research interests to the address above by 15 January 2006. They should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly to that address by the same date.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. Applications from women and historically under-represented groups are particularly welcome.
